Headed down to Bloomsburg PA for the Dutch Wheelmen's half century. The traditional full century was last weekend but I guess because of the poor weather riders, including me, skipped it. The Dutchwheelmen rescheduled the 50 mile ride by piggy backing it on the Trek Breast Cancer Awareness ride. The breast cancer awareness ride had a 10 mile and a 25 mile route selection. The fifty mile ride would turn out to be a low key ride with no water stops or maps. Route was well marked and I assume a sag was provided though I never saw nor needed it. Only had about thirty people in the lot at the start for all three rides. Saw several racer types though it appeared most or all of them only did the twenty five mile route. We lined up for announcements and were told to have a nice ride but no one seemed in any hurry to leave. Rolled out on my own and figured the fast guys would catch me eventually but ended up riding the course alone. Enjoyed the ride regardless though there were a couple of downhills that the road surface was so bumpy I had trouble holding on my bars and checked my pockets at the bottom to make sure nothing had shaken out. Course started out fairly flat and was hoping for some climbs but there really wasn't anything epic. Course was sort of sawtooth as it appeared I made a few crossing of the ridges with most of the course in two river valleys. There were six moderate climbs with only the last being tough at a couple of miles long and twelve to fifteen percent grades. Best part of the ride was cresting the hill at the halfway point and seeing pumpkin fields as far as my eyes could see. Not sure if they were sincere pumpkin patches but I am sure the Great Pumpkin knows about this place. There were two covered bridges on the ride and I think the original century had six covered bridges but that may have changed due to the recent flooding washing roads and bridges out in this area. Almost took a spill on one of the bridges as my front wheel dropped in to the crack between two of the wooden planks. Still not sure how I did it but hopped out of the crack and didn't go down but did get a nice adrenalin rush. Enjoyed the ride as I pretty much spent the day touring. Climbed okay today but had no desire yet to do any high speed stuff. Very surprised that I didn't get caught by anyone which makes me think that only two or three riders attempted the fifty mile route which was too bad as it was a terrific day for riding and the course though a little rough in spots was very scenic.
