I'm really enjoying the Long Prairie Trail (And the connecting Stone Bridge Trail) lately. Which is slightly strange because when I was strictly a mountain biker, the thought of riding a flat, straight, smooth trail just sounded boring beyond belief. But since I got the PoPrad, I'm having fun on this trail again.
Well, it has always been the perfect vintage Schwinn path, because there are no hills. And it's also a great Ice Biking destination. But the PoPrad, with its big, skinny knobby tires is a blast to ride on this trail.
Yeah, it's flat, but this is exactly the type of trail that will help me with my cycling weak points. One of them being pedaling hard for a long time without stopping. If you want to go fast on the flats, you gotta work it. If I keep riding this big knobby tire road bike on this trail, I will get faster and stronger.
I also noticed for the first time, at the end of the east end of the trail, at County Line Road, There are still railroad tracks in McHenry County. There was even a few train cars on the tracks. You can see it in one of the pictures. The blue-ish scrap metal in the woods is one of the few remnants of the train derailment that lead to this railroad bed becoming a multi use path.
I had an old bi-plane flew overhead, that was kool.
It's also a scenic and pretty ride during all 4 seasons.
A new memorial bench went in today at the train derailment site rest area.
