 Red River Ride
Weather Channel called for a cool front coming in and pushing some rain ahead of it. Had a five hour window before the rain was due to strike so had lots of time for a tour up to the Red River. It was cloudy on the way up to Woodland where I would hit the start of my unexplored loop. The roads were wet but didn't encounter any rain at all. Sun even came out after ninty minutes of riding as I started the thirty mile new loop portion of my ride. Wasn't much to see on the loop except the normal prarieland and grazing cattle. Only saw a couple of pick ups and a tractor up near the Howdy U plantation on the loop. Roads were smooth by Texas standards and even encountered some woods near the river. Today's historic marker was at a ferry crossing on the Red River where Sam Houston and Davy Crockett first ventured into Texas. Also at the site was the grave of an Englishwoman which is reportably one of the oldest Anglo graves in Texas. Another marker was there for a local hero of the Alamo who doesn't lie there as Santa Anna burned all the bodies of the Texans after the fall. There is no longer any sign of the ferry crossing nor the town or people that blossumed around it. Finished the loop and had a long thirty five mile section into a headwind on my way back to Paris.
