 Seminole Trail
Thought my cold had subsided but either it has returned or have a new strain. With a hilly century tomorrow thought I would do another day of relaxed riding. Weather was again sunny and warm with light winds. Checked out the Cross Seminole Trail that has a trailhead not far from my motel in Altamonte Springs. Trailhead looked great with a nice little store included. After that though things went downhill. Saw a few cyclists go by as I unloaded my bike and prepared for the ride. Looked for a trail map on site but couldn't locate one so just headed out in the direction I saw the other cyclists go earlier. The part of the trail I rode on went through a heavily commercial area. So there were at least a dozen property entries with stop signs for every mile. There were also a few four lanes that had to be crossed. Really couldn't establish any kind of momentum or rhythm. There was also a homeless guy camping out on the trail at the start of my ride near the trailhead. Add into the pleasure of dodging people walking ill-mannered pit bulls. Turned out to be pretty stressful and not what I had intended for a relaxed ride. While the surface at least was initially in good shape after a couple of miles it went bad with tree root humps and sand and vegetation reclaiming the terrain. Gave up after three miles and headed back. Had to dodge the homeless guy that was now squatted in the middle of the trail scratching the pavement like it was a lottery ticket. A bit too much of an urban paradise for me. Returning to the trailhead I headed out of a sidewalk toward Lake Mary. I noticed a bike lane on the road and decided I would take my chances on it on the return trip. Had a close call when my front wheel feel into a deep, thin parallel crack in the sidewalk as I was watching for traffic at a road crossing. Almost lost it but recovered in time. Had enough bad signs for one day. Found a side road that returned me part way to the start. It turned out to be the only good part of the day but only lasted a couple of miles. Rode the bike lane for the remainder and loaded up and got out of Dodge. I do not recommend the Cross Seminole Trail even if this is only a small part of a larger system. Did get some miles in but the cost in stress easily outweighed any benefit.
