 Trail to Palatka
Intended to do a half century course from the Watermelon Ride but couldn't find a secure place to start the ride. On my way there though saw several cyclists preparing for a ride on a trail along the highway. Went to plan B and decided to park at the trailhead and explore the trail. If it didn't go far I would ride to the start of the initial course. Trail was named the Palatka to Saint Augustine State Trail. Started out heading for Saint Augustine but didn't get far before the trail was closed. Appeared to end before crossing I-95. Turned about and headed back toward Palatka. Trail was in pretty good shape traveling between wooded sections and open sections through farmland. Saw quite a few cyclists as well as walkers and dog walkers. There were a couple of sections where tree roots were causing sharp humps but it was mostly an excellent surface . Did see one pit bull but this one was well behaved despite not being on a leash. Highlight of the ride was a rooster strutting on the trail. Stopped on a couple of the small bridges to look for alligators but couldn't see any. Rode until neared Palatka proper where I started to encounter panhandlers on the trail. Climbed the bridge on SR 17 over the St Johns River before turning and heading back. I had reached twenty miles and figured that was good enough for today. Trail continued through the city but preferred riding in farmland. Ride back was uneventful and was disappointed that the rooster was elsewhere on the return trip. I did hear him crowing though so he was still at work. Quads are quite sore and sinuses are still bothersome so pedaled easy and tried too soak up some sunshine. Not doing much for my fitness level but it was a good day on the bike.
