Sunny and warm day for a ride but at the expense of a vicious south wind. Went against my usual routine of riding into the wind and catching a tailwind back home. Decided to ride with the wind on the highway section and into the wind on the back roads section of the tour. High wind warnings were forecast for later in the day and so planned a shorter ride than I'd like to do on a seventy degree sunny day. Actually got into the big chain ring for ten miles or so with the wind at my back. Turned into a crosswind at Powderly and descended briefly into the Red River Valley. Occasionally felt strong and came out of the saddle on a couple of the mild rollers. Had good speed and outpaced a pack of pit bulls after one small climb. Road surface was less than ideal on the back roads being a rough surfaced traditional Texas shake and bake. On the plus side was the lack of traffic as I only saw five cars over a dozen miles of riding. Fun ended as I turned into the wind and climbed out of the valley. Ended the ride with nineteen miles of in my face unpleasantness. I was near maxing out the heart rate at speeds of ten to twelve miles an hour. Was relived as I rolled into town and found some shelter from the prairie wind.
