 Treasure Island
Finished up the job last night and decided to head to South Florida and do some riding down there. I like the riding better in North Florida but opted for eighty degree temperatures as the cold wave pushing down from the north is going to keep the northern part of the state cool for a few days. Drove to Port Mayaca and slept in the truck for a couple hours at a trail head of the Lost Trail until the sun made it warm enough to ride. Rode north on the elevated, paved trail and decided to go as far as construction would allow then turn and ride back. Really didn't enjoy the first few miles as was very tired and seemed to be doing quite a bit of work in the supposed tailwind. Did enjoy my interface with a flock of white wading birds. I spooked them into flight and they flew parallel to the trail and I could just maintain their speed. The flock started out with at least a hundred but every so often a few would peel off, circle back behind me, and land on the edge of the canal. This continued for two or three miles until there were only three birds left. The lead bird just kept pushing and the two other birds and I struggled to stay on. After another half mile the two gave it up and circled back and landed amongst another flock. The lead bird realizing he was alone and also gave up and landed. It was really neat riding level with them and helped pass a few miles. Got to Treasure Island before the trail was closed for construction and it turned out to be near twenty miles. Turned around and thought I would be heading into a headwind but found my speed to be much faster and the pedaling easier. Turned out to be a following crosswind which made the ride back kind of fun. After thirty miles the legs actually started to feel better and seemed to have some snap in them. Ended up feeling good and with forty miles in. Headed down to Ft Myers for a week of riding.
