 Sanibel Island
Stayed in Ft Myers out near the International Airport off I-75. My motel was on Daniels Parkway which is one of the major arteries of FT Myers extensive bike trail system. Headed out today for Sanibel Island which is very bike friendly with its own bike trail network. First ten miles across Ft Myers is quite a bit of stop and go as you can only ride a couple miles at a time before having to cross some major motorways. Wait times can often be five minutes at some of the lights. Connected with Sumerlin and used it to cross to the island causeway. Once you cross San Carlos you leave the city and enter Indian Country. It still is very commercialized but one is able to ride several miles at a time without interuption. Found out how really overweight and out of shape I have become on the only climb of the day, the bridge to the causeway islands. The bridge itself is about three quarter miles long and has an average grade of around four percent. I was out of breath and leg well before topping the seventy five foot high climb. Took it easy after that and enjoyed the three miles of causeway across the Gulf of Mexico to Sanibel. Stayed on the main trail to Captiva on the Northwest end of the island and spent a little time on the beach at the end of the road. Headed back and decided to ride through the Darling National Wildlife Refuge. It costs a dollar for the four mile self guided tour. Didn't enjoy it much as the road surface was very rough shake and bake. Did learn about the proper method for dealing with a bird caught on a fish hook. Didn't see any birds that I didn't encounter in the canals in the populated sections of Ft Myers but it was kind of nice to see the mangroves. had to stop of course and look at the alligator sunning next to the road with all the other tourists. The tourists were looking and not sunning. Climb back to the mainland wasn't as bad as the climb out but I did get pretty beat riding back through the city in the headwind. Overall a very nice sunny day ride. Too fat and tired to do much speed work but am hoping I can spin off the fat with some long slow miles this week.
