Ride started out again with a ten mile section through the bike trails of Fort Myers before reaching the open road at San Carlos Blvd. Had a mild tailwind on the way out and was only mildly chilly for a few minutes until the sun got above the palms and it was comforatably warm the rest of the day. Seems great to get out as the sun rises and start the ride in short sleeves. Once to San Carlos, I headed to the south across the islands along the coast. Both keys are connected on both ends with bridges that supplied today's climbing. The first bridge climb, Big Carlos, to Ft Myers Beach is a good short effort but a little easier than the climb to Sanibel Islands. Ft Myers Beach is heavily developed and heavily trafficed but there are few side roads on the narrow strip of land so you can ride for ten or fifteen miles without interuption. The climb, Little Carlos, to the second island, Lovers Key State Park, is less of a challenge. Lovers Key is sparely developed and is quite open both to the sun, winds and to scenic veiws with Estero Bay to the east and the gulf on the left. Another short climb, Little Hickory, returns the road to the mainland at Bonita Beach. Continued riding along the beach until hitting some more bike trails on the northern edge of Naples. Toured around the beach front properties of Naples and was quite impressed with the sculpted beauty of the area. Haven't seen all of Naples but from the parts I have seen this is the most beautiful and cleanest city I've ever encountered. It most be very costly to maintain. Got up around forty five miles and stopped at a beachside park and had some crunchy bars. Stopped at a public bathroom and surprised to find it was air-conditioned. Return ride was pleasant and uneventful as I easily cranked off the miles. Started to get a little tired as I hit the headwinds and traffic as I again rode the trails back thru Ft Myers. Saw dozens of cyclists of all types today and really enjoyed the ride.
