 East of Fort Myers
Legs were tired this morning and started feeling a little worn down and didn't look forward to riding in the strong east wind which is still blowing steadily. So started the day into the wind and hoped to check out some of the trails east of the city. Rode along Daniels Parkway trail until I got to Little Fenway the Red Soxs winter training stadium where the trail moved onto the four lane which had a little more traffic volume than I wanted to deal with this morning. So got off the trail and headed north through some housing developments and started seeing some paint markings on the road for various charity rides. I began following one of them. Markers took me through a couple of undeveloped developments which was good riding as it was a great road surface with no traffic. Had one bad section I had to ride through. I noticed several bee hives in a field and was soon being pelted by bees still working in the high winds. Got through it all without getting stung although a few of the impacts especially on my face were painful enough for me. The route just ambled along and didn't seem to be going anywhere and just followed good low traffic roads. Continued north almost to the river where new pavement had covered the markings. Rather than continue to the east, I opted for a short day and headed west toward the city. Thought I could eventually get on the Linear Park Trail and would use it to get back to Daniels. Had to navigate through some rough areas where the bicycle of choice seemed to be one with lots of baskets that the homeless people pushed along carrying all there belongings. Reached the heart of the community at the soup kitchen where dozens of the shopping cart bikes were parked, then passed through the ghetto with chrome rims and battling sub-woofers before emerging into the commercial district where the quality of stores improved the further I got from the heart of the city. Had a little problem getting across some of the larger roads as I had little choice but to wait for the crosswalk signs to grant me passage and the wait time at some of them was significant. Got back to the Linear Park and rode along the canal with its wading birds and turtles to finish off today's short adventure.
