Now the training schedule has weekly goals - previously it was just a matter of getting some base miles in. Now the weekly goals presents two problems - one good and one bad. The good problem is that its a tangible measuring tool that can be used to determine how I am shaping up compared to what my body will be going through while on the tour. The bad problem - potential bad problem - is that these goals are concrete goals that can lead to thinking that "I have got to do this ride in order to reach my goal, and eventually be in shape for the tour." The bad thing about that is that it can be mentally draining 'haveing' to do this day-in & day-out. The number one thing to do to combat this is to keep it fun - do different routes, ride with different intensity, etc. Also, taking a day off isn't necessarily a bad thing - the body likes (and needs) rest, too.
One good thing this week, too, is I finally received a (another) replacement rear wheel of my Fuji Newest. Problems with the original wheel came to head when I discovered a crack in the rim mid- way through the Wednesday ride during last years (2004) Mid-West Camp in Wisconsin. I receive a replacment wheel a couple weeks later and to make a long story short: I rode on it for about 1,500 miles (July '04 - June '05) and had 9 broken spokes. The new replacement wheel is the same model, etc., so the jury is a still out as to if this wheel will 'make the grade' or if I will need to buy a good wheel.
Also today: after Cycles of Joys launched their initial bike collection drive yesterday (300+ bikes) I am curious if I can turn my transcontinental bike tour into some type of fund-raiser for them. Just a thought (inspriation?) I had today - will follow-up in the next couple weeks.
