On my way to work this morning, I dropped my water bottle as I tried to take a swig just after turning onto Brown Rd. Realizing it was falling out of my hand (which was inside my ski gloves for only the second time this season), I tried to catch it but it fell to the road and started rolling across the traffic lane. There were no cars coming behind me, but there were 5 cars coming in the opposing direction lane; luckily the bottle stopped rolling a couple feet short of the double yellow line. I parked the bike on the shoulder, walked over to pick it up then continued on my way.
On the way home (actually up to church being a Wed night), I took a little scenic route by heading south on Walton and after cutting over to Woodson rolled up North to Midland to get to Sims. Once on Sims I followed the route I would take when my office was over on Price Rd. I decided to try this route today because a) something a little different than climbing the hill up Walton Rd from Page to Midland, b) the wind was registered at 16 MPH from west, and going Walton to Midland would mean I would be heading into the wind for a few miles, and c) kind of like to avoid the intersection at Midland & Woodson where the shoulder disappears between the intersection & the entrance to QT and the traffic that has lined up at the light seems a little impatient with me clearing the lane through that little stretch (30 yrds, maybe). It was a good diversion, even though the wind didn't seem to be that bad when I did have to go west.
One westward section is Breckenridge Rd in Overland/St Ann area, and there is a short & steep downhill where I peg my max speed of the ride. As I was rolling out from the descent and heading toward a stop sign & right turn a couple blocks later, I hit some rough pavement and thought I heard a couple 'click-click' sounds - what one of my tail lights would sound like hitting the pavement. After making the right turn, I pulled over to inspect my bike and noticed that my blinking Firefly had flipped off its perch on my saddle bag. About that time a pick up truck pulled along side me - the truck was waiting to make a right turn onto Breckenridge as I came screaming down the hill. They rolled down the window and told my light was lying in the road back there - I thanked them for their generosity, and back tracked my tracks to see if I could find a blinking light in the middle of the street.
Just after I made the turn to retrace my tracks on Breckenridge, a couple young men were walking along - one texting on his phone - and they asked if I had dropped 'this' as they pulled a blinking light out of one of the pockets of their jacket. I told them "Yes I did" as I accepted it from them and thanked them for returning it to me. He went on to say that he was thinking about mounting in on his nose like Rudolph for Christmas. I told him I'm glad he didn't try it yet! I remounted it in its designated position and countinued on my way, arriving at church without any further incidents.
