Strong east wind and warm temperatures again. Thought about riding to Naples again but opted for another slow ride to Sanibal Island. Caught the eastern morning breeze through the urban trails and had an easy section to San Carlos. I was waiting for the light to cross Summerlyn Ave when a couple of riders breezed by on the other side. I had to wait a couple minutes for the light and went off in pursuit. Didn't think I would catch them on the flats but thought I might narrow the gap on the climbs over the causeway bridges. Had a little speed today as I was able to hold it in the upper twenties without too much effort. Caught one rider after a couple of miles right before the climb but still couldn't see the other up the road. Finally saw him on the 'hill' after I started the climb but he was at nearing the top as I started the ascent. Felt good to be riding fast again and pushed the climb hard and was pleased to see he was still in sight as I started descending. Got into the thirties on the downgrade and held it near thirty over the smaller causeway bridges and got within thirty seconds as we rolled onto Sanibel Island. Thought I might catch him if he was heading to Captiva but lost him in traffic and never saw him again. Kept a good pace to Captiva and spent some time at the beach. Had nothing left but sore legs when I remounted the bike for the return trip and nursed myself back through the headwind. Finished the ride pretty wrung out but at least had a little fun on the way out and was encouraged that I still have some speed left in the legs.
