Fairly nice forecast today with the sun driving the temperatures into the fifties. Unfortunately the wind was blowing hard out of the north and will bring the cold weather back with a high tomorrow projected to be in the twenties. Wasn't sure what to expect on my nemesis climb of New Odessa Hill and so started off spinning in the saddle. Legs felt surprisingly strong although it probably more due to the tailwind rather than my current fitness level. I also didn't want to push it too much with a hard day scheduled on the computrainer tomorrow. Crested in a little over ten minutes which is a rather poor time but I was satisfied as it has been much worse. Had a really pleasant ride to Alpine with the tailwind. Road was dry but had to occasionally dodge huge piles and bands of rock salt. Felt warm even as I pedaled between snowbanks that towered over my head. Had a wicked cross wind up the climb out of Alpine as well as on the long downgrade to Horseheads. Kept good speed but had to lean into the gusting wind a couple of times as it tried to nudge me into traffic. Fun ended as I made the turn in Horseheads and headed toward Watkins. Speed dropped into the headwind, and it felt as if I had two flat tires. Average speed didn't improve despite the downgrade and rolled into Montour with heavy legs. Mostly nice ride but felt pretty beat afterwards despite the low key effort.
