 Accidents Do Happen
The Swamp ROMP was riding today, so I left the house in a light fog last this morning. I rode down to Cleveland Park and ran into a pair of Hawkeyes - Jeff and Deb. We talked about Iowa a bit and they told me to enjoy the Hawkeyes and I told them to enjoy the Rose Bowl. I rode on to the Swamp Rabbit Cafe to see if any of the Swamp ROMP people would be there. One was tehre and they were expecting 9. There were 13 when we left. We rode up the trail and picked up two more riders along the way and had 15 when we stopped On campus at Furman a new couple needed to make a pit stop, so I stayed back with them so that they wouldn't be lost. We went on up the trail and found the group at Duke's Doggs. We went in and spent a long time getting our food and chatting with each other. While we were there the group really split up and went to different things. We ended up with about 8 of us riding back down the trail. I got with Karen and chatted our way back down the trail. When we got to the pocket park at Sulphur Springs she wrecked right into my path and I ran into her and wrecked on top of her.

Karen wears toe clips and she kicked out of her left clip and tried to put her foot on a 12 inch wall and she missed. Her right foot was still clipped in, so she fell over in front of me. I ran into her and wecked on top of her. I had my shoes clicked in but had both feet out and got one hand down to keep from belly flopping on top of her. When we stopped Karen was on her back on a brick sidewalk and I was laying on top of her with my bike between my legs. Fortunately I caught my weight with my left hand and my feet, but I told Karen that I was stuck and couldn't move. Some of our group came over and lifted me and my bike off of Karen. I have a good bruise on my left shin where the bottom bar of the bike was laying across it. My bike seemed to take the brunt of the wreck. The chain was off, the front wheel was stuck against the frame, and once I had it rolling the rear derailleur was struggling to shift properly. We rode back to the cafe, then I rode to TTR to get a new spare inner tube and a patch kit and the have them check the front wheel, brakes, and the rear derailleur. The put the bike on the rack. Jonathan took the front wheel to their truing wheel and trued it while JJ adjusted the dereailleur. They got it straightened out and back together in a few minutes. They gave me a tube of glue to put with my patch kit, put a new spare inner tube in my bad, and mounted a new reflector on the rear wheel. JJ also trued the rear wheel on the bike. When they wre finished I went to pay and they said "No charge." Karen had called them and told them to put everything on her whether it was part of the accident or not. The only charges for the inner tube and the reflector. The inner tube was to replace a tube that went bad last week and the reflector was to replace a reflector that I lost 3 years ago. I called Karne and thanked her but told her that I didn't expect her to pay. But she had been very insistent with them and paid for my inner tube and reflector.
