Got a flat tire on the way home tonight. It was a new experience to fix it in the dark and being so cold. I had my ski gloves on, and started working with both of them on, but eventually took of the right one.
It was dark where I was at, on McDonnell Blvd along the east end of the terminal. Needing to take my duffle bag off the rack so I could get to my tools, etc. in my saddlebag, I sat it on the ground a couple feet behind me with my tail light on it to provide some warning for oncoming motorist. I stopped where I did in part because of the 8-foot wide shoulder, and in part because of the concrete barrier to lean my bike up against while it was without a rear wheel. Where I was at was also right under the landing approach for the right-hand runway. That's why its so dark where I was - no street lights, so as to no confuse pilots. A couple planes flew over my head as I completed my repairs. On the plus side, the planes were landing from the east - if they were taking off towards the east, they would have been so much LOUDER going overhead.
I kept wondering, the whole time I was working on my tire, if airport security or the local PD (Berkley) was going to stop by and investigate/confirm my intentions of being where I was. I think there was a vehicle driving on the inside of the airport's fence. I saw this out of the corner of my eye, and didn't lookup from my work to confirm.
Since it was so cold I decided I'd just put in the new tube, as not to mess with a patch. It was a slow leak, I probably could have made it another mile or so down the road, but it wouldn't have lasted all the way home. After pulling the tube from the tire, locating the puncture in the tube and transferring its location to the tire, I was able to find a small shard of glass in the tread.
