 Old Tucson
Fairly cool day today with a little wind. Repeated parts of yesterday's loop without the final climb through Gates Pass. First short climb up into Saguaro National Park was as fun as yesterday's ascent except that instead of the lights dimming on the steep section the legs put out some power, and I squirreled up the assorted short climbs. Since I felt pretty good I decided to push the pace for an hour and do some speed. Pushed the big chain ring with authority on the downgrade into Picture Rock with unfamiliar speeds in the upper twenties. Kept the pressure on after making the turn and continued upward. Opted to continue around the southern part of the park to hit the Mile Wide Road further west before starting the long grade to Old Tucson. Legs started slowing down after a couple miles of the five percent grade and bailed on my hour of hard pushing goal at fifty eight minutes. Seems like I could have done the extra two minutes as I type this, but one really had to be there to appreciate quitting a bit early. Took a short break at the entrance to the Tucson Mountain Park then checked out the McCain Loop in the park. Instead of continuing up the grade the loop descended quickly into the cacti forest. Thought I would have to pay for the fun descent with a steep climb back out of the loop but it didn't happen as the loop appears to avoid the top of the ridge. Came out near Old Tucson and then it was pretty much a ten mile down grade down Kinney Road to Tucson Estates. I got a quick look at the observatory on top of Mount Kitt that I had climbed last week then turned away and continued descending into South Tucson where I picked up the loop trail. Puttered along behind some slower riders on the trail until a fast guy passed us. I pursued him through the slower riders and kept pace with the fast guy for a few miles. Legs still felt good and was able to take chunks out of his time on the occasional dips beneath the bridges. Ended up being a little overdressed by the end of the ride but other than that it was a good day on the bike.
