Window Rock is located about 27 miles northwest of Gallup, NM, just across the NM-AZ state line. It is not only the site of the natural phenomenon that provides the site its name – a hole in the 200 foot high sandstone hill. It is also the administrative Capitol and administrative center of the Navajo Nation, as well as the site for the Veterans Memorial honoring the many Navajos who served in the US military, especially those known as the Code Talkers during WWII. The Code Talkers are credited for helping win the war with the use of their Navajo language when transmitting messages – the ‘code’ was never broken by the enemy. My brother-in-law, Robert, had explained to me that one of his neighbors is Albert Smith, a Code Talker who was used in an advisory capacity for, and made a cameo appearance in, the movie Windtalkers. It was a bit chilly out walking around – temps just above freezing and a bit of a breeze to boot.
