Took a little day trip today to El Morro National Monument. It is located about 30 miles south & 25 miles east of Gallup. There is a 1/2 mile trail that leads to the historic pool and past hundres of inscriptions and petroglyphs. The option then is to return back to the Visitor's Center or continue on the trail for a 2-mile trail that continues onto the top of the bluff for a breathtaking view and Ancestral Puebloan ruins.

The trail was nice and warm in the sun as we started out on the trail along the south side of the bluff. Then as we went around to the north side, it felt colder in the shade of the bluff, plus there was icey spots on the path, as well some snow still off the path that hasn't melted due to its lack of exposure to the sun.

The trail then continued up the side of the bluff and lead us around the top of the bluff providing some spectacular views of the surrounding area as well as the box canyon that the bluff surrounded. Before we started our decent there were some exposed Ancestral Puebloan ruins. Between approximately 1275 to 1350 AD, up to 1500 people lived in this 875 room pueblo. The location was strategic—it was near the only water source for many miles and located atop a nearly impenetrable bluff.

We then desended down the south side of the bluff and completed our visit at El Morro.
