 Cleveland Park After the Deluge
Yesterday my rain gauge showed 3.5 inches of rain. I know that it really poured in the late afternoon and that we have a basement full of water. I have a box fan down there drying things out right now! Today the sun was out and it pushed 60 degrees, so I headed to Cleveland Park after work. Driving into the park I could see that most of had been under water but the city had been cleaning the mud and debris. I started out the Hincapie trail and it was clear to the bridge that crosses the Reedy. That bridge was covered with mud and debris. After the bridge every low spot was thick with mud. I went until it was too messy then turned around and rode the loop around the Y fields. I headed back to Cleveland Park to go north to West End Gardens, Falls Park, and on out to the north end of the trail. I got caught in a few muddy places but made it to the north end. The rapids before Church Street were flowing very hard and parts of West End Gardens is still under water. When I passed the old Meadowbrook Park you could see where the outfield and infield used to be. The outfield looks like a swamp while the old infield area is slightly elevated from it and is relatively dry. On the trip back down the river there were two guys launching a john boat just below the Church Street rapids. Once I was back in Cleveland Park I stayed on the streets to avoid the mud and circled around to get up some mileage. I followed the trek of the boaters as they went down the river. As they approached the double bridge and the 3 foot drop off I hung around to see what they would do. With the river levels the 3 foot drop was only about a one foot drop. They went straight over it and the guy in front got soaked. I'm sure that they ended up with a few inches of water in the boat, but they continued on downstream. Once I was home I dragged out a hose. cleaned the mud off the bike, and put my shorts into the washing machine! Even though it was messy I still had an enjoyable 13.4 mile ride.
