 Bury the Hatchet.
John S, Mark O, Paul, Jen & I left the Park N Ride lot at Mid Rivers & I-70 at 9 AM, making our way over to the Golden Eagle ferry to cross the mighty Mississippi. We then continued rolling across Calhoun County to the Brussels ferry to cross the Illinois River before heading north to Pere Marquette State Park. The lodge there was no longer serving breakfast, so we had to order from the lunch menu - there wasn't much to choose from to my liking, especially since I was in the mood for breakfast. I followed the two guys (John S & Mark O) that ordered before me and chose the Reuben, but opted for the 'southern' version that replaces the corn beef with turkey. Well, I guess when it said turkey I was thinking of a club sandwich, so I was severely disappointed when the turkey-Reuben showed up and barely ate half of it, and only a few of the sweet potato fries - I love sweet potatoes, but in the form of fries just doesn't wet my whistle.

While riding across Calhoun County to the Brussels ferry I noticed a hatchet laying along side the rode. I left it there and made a mental note of its location, so I wouldn't have to lug it to breakfast & such. While on the return leg we were going to take a slightly different route, heading more south along the 'peninsula' between the two rivers. To retrieve the hatchet I had to by-pass the turn for the planned route for about a 1/4 mile before spotting the hatchet along side the road. I was wearing two jerseys, one long sleeve and one short, so I slide it up under my outer jersey putting the head of the hatchet down in the center rear pocket of the under jersey. Now I'm packin'!

As we toddled along our planned alternate route, Mark, John, & I were coming up on spot were some horses had gathered by a gate, across the street from a house. As we rolled toward the gate, a pup of a dog made his way toward us and crossed the street to the house, barking at us as he trotted toward the house. Then as we rolled past the herd of horses, the seemed to get spooked and started bolting along the fence line, the same direction we were heading. Then the owner, who happened to be among the horses, hollered something like, "Hey! Come back here!" I wasn't sure if he was talking to me/us or the dog, so we kept going. Unfortunately, Jen & Paul were a little was behind us, and the horse owner got Jen's attention and gave her an earful about us spooking his horses. Jen was her gracious self and defused the situation by asking about the horses, etc. I told Jen that if I had stopped & talked w/the guy, he might have gotten an earful from me. Its not like we were making a lot of noise, or even hollering at the dog to make sure it didn't attack us; I'm not sure how he could think us riding down the street would have caused such a stir.

Overall, traffic was fairly light and the weather was beautiful without being to cold to start and warming up nicely, although there was a stiff head wind for the last few miles back to our cars.
