Body was still very sore today and didn’t think I would have much fun climbing out of the Basin, and so drove down to Panther Junction where the riding starts out a bit flatter. Got all set to go but kept trying to talk myself out of riding. Finally manned up and compromised on taking a very easy day. Headed down hill on HWY 118 toward Rio Grande Village campground. Coasted for ten miles into the desert then turned around and climbed back. Had to recover about twelve hundred feet of elevation over the ten mile climb. Was terribly afraid of running out of juice again and so kept things going at as low intensity as the steady four percent grade would allow. Fortunately I had a slight tailwind on the climb that made things a bit easier. All sorts of alarms were going off in my various injured muscle groups but other than a couple of the middle miles it was still a decent ride. Actually felt pretty good over the last three miles but had quite a good deal of discomfort as I dismounted. A cool day in the desert but at least the winds were mild and blowing in the right direction.
