Legs felt much better this morning but still have a list of ailments including the mystery chest muscle damage and an upset stomach which has kept me from eating and even drinking much over the last couple of days. Decided on hiking in the morning as it really doesn’t heat up until after noon to provide for good riding weather as it gets quite cold in the desert at night. Walked up the Lost Mine Trail here in Big Bend which gained a couple thousand feet of elevation in two and a half miles of constant climbing. Got a bottle of water down during the spectacular walk and felt a little stronger. Drove down off the mountain to Panther Junction and set out to do another short ride. Headed west today toward Castolon as wanted to catch a tailwind back on the return leg. Temperature was in the mid-seventies which was ideal. Sign along the road said the desert floor can get up to one hundred and fifty degrees in the summer, so I think I picked the right season to ride here. First three miles was into a ten mile an hour wind and up a steady three percent grade. After cresting the ridge headed mostly down but did have to cross one more ridge. Planned on doing ten out and back but added a couple of extra miles of fine riding until making a U-turn at the Castolon turn off. Would have loved to do the long climb to Castolon but just don’t trust the body to hold out at this point. Spun the first couple of miles back with a good tailwind but had some trouble on the climb out of Croton Spring. Not sure what my problem is as the climb was only a mile and a half long with an eight to ten percent grade, but was sucking air, overheating and running out of leg as I struggled to get to the top. Did make it without walking, which was an improvement, and had a partial recovery before the next section of long uphill grade. Spun without authority up a couple miles of three percent until cresting and having a fairly fast descent back to the junction. Not sure what the problem is. Perhaps it is a combination of old age, high elevation and poor nutrition that is causing my struggles. Hope it clears up soon as although the twenty milers are great riding there is lots of road and terrain to check out.
