BRRRR!!!! A Cold Ride with Erica
Hmmmm!!!! I invited Erica to ride today as I knew that she wouldn't go out with it being chilly. She usually won't ride under 70 degrees, but she surprised me and accepted. I told her to be ready to go at 3:35 so that we could be back before dark. She fooled me by showing up. So we took off to East North to follow my regular route to Furman and home. It was cooler than I anticipated. The forecast was for 39 to 40 degrees, but it was 34 when we left the house. Erica hasn't been riding and really struggled to keep up. I spent a lot of time waiting and loafing to keep her in view. When we rode together last year she would kill me on the hills, but that is no longer the case. So our average speed fell way off today. Coming home I was looking for another way to get home as Erica is very afraid of traffic. I had decided to take a new route that I followed on Google Maps, but the road has a bridge that has been closed for several years. We found another way around but by then it was nearly dark. The last two miles was in the dark. Plus we rode up Wade Hampton on the sidewalk. I tried to keep her close to me as Erica didn't have any lights on her bike. I had my flashers on front and back. Also Erica keep getting off and walking up hills the last few miles, so things really slowed down then. She isn't ready to ride this distance in the cold weather, but i told her that the next time she should drive to the downtown post office and I'll leave the house and meet her there in 15 minutes. Then she could ride about 11 miles mostly on the Swamp Rabbit and wouldn't have many hills or have to ride in heavy traffic. She would be able to handle that much better. It was 31 when I got home - I was surprised that I wasn't much colder.
