Thought I might get lucky and get another day of sunny climbing in but it just didn't happen. Cold front and horrid weather are supposed to arrive tomorrow but forecast for late in the day was near forty. Started off climbing up to Odessa and out toward Cayuttaville and thought the near thousand feet of climbing would keep me warm until the temperature climbed a little under the hazy sun. Had really poor climbing though as I just struggled at a low cadence in a big gear to make heat. Wind picked up over the top and caught a chill and hunkered down and kept plodding on. Got into Mechlanburg then started climbing up the 79 toward Watkins. Fingers had gone numb and rest of body was cold. Made another plodding climb that generated a little heat that helped the body but not my hands. Lost all the heat on the fast downhill though and decided to cut my ride short and head for home for some hot liquid and to pick up some chemical pack heaters for the gloves. Had an uncomfortable downhill to Watkins and I was afraid if any cars pulled out in front of me from 414 my hands might be to stiff and numb to use the brakes. Cars were nice enough to respect my right of way and I made it down without any high speed manuevers. Once I got down out of the hills and into the valley I was sheltered from the cold west wind and the feeling came back to my hands. Stayed in the valley and out of the wind for the rest of the ride to Horseheads and back with only a short pop up Burch Hill Road before dropping back down in. First thirty mile loop through the hills was extremely tough but actually had a good time on the second loop to Horseheads even doing a good deal of speed work on the run back to Montour. The temperature never got anywhere near forty and I imagine at times the wind chill was in the teens. Felt good when I finished the ride and was glad I pushed on.
