 Ride to the Rescue
Malvin Tx today for another metric. Ride started promptly at 8:00 in a heavy fog and temperature in the low 30s. Actually started out with less clothing than yesterday since the temperature was supposed to climb rapidly as soon as the south wind blew away the fog. The 60 mile riders were staged first and we rode off into the fog following our ride marshall who after the first mile led us into a dead end street. The marking arrows were the sign type and no indications were on the pavement. Several turn arrows were placed so that there was a turn between the intended turn and the marker so that if you took the first turn after the arrow you were lost. Got separated from the lead group in the mayhem. A nice two mile long 24 MPH pull got me back up to the front. Sat in for a bit then went off into the fog to catch a pair of riders just visible up the road. Caught up with the ride marshall and another rider and was soon joined by a fourth rider. Traded pulls for several miles keeping the pace near 22 until there were only two of us. Neither of us knew the course and put in quite a bit of effort looking at the map and trying to figure out if we were still on course. Asked the people at the second rest stop if they knew which way the 60 mile course went and they didn't have a clue. Near the halfway point my partner started lagging and fell off the pace. Rode on alone and got 'off' the course by following a right turn arrow that should have been a straight through arrow. Stopped at a rest stop and asked for directions and kind of got back on course. Never really was off the course but missed a loop of it. Rode to the finish and only had 45 miles. Met up with my previous riding partner and he too had followed the arrows and missed the a loop. Ended up with 20.5 average for 45. Took a cruise around town to get a few more miles in since it had warmed up nicely. Had a couple of post ride hot dogs and called it a day. The roads were in good shape but were even flatter than yesterday's ride. Organizers really need to work on their markings. It is true I had a map but I am not really interested in stopping every half mile to check my position against the map. I could also have riden with a ride marshall but like to ride my own pace rather than the pace of the slowest person in a group. Had fun while it lasted and a really strong ride but overall disappointed for not completing the course.
