Drove to Okeechobee to get some low intensity miles in before tomorrow's metric. Figured the trail around Lake Okeechobee on the top of the Herbert Hover Dike would be a good option as it is pan flat and only has a couple of short sections of highway to get around a couple of inlets. Was hoping to see some wildlife but other than a couple of wading birds all I saw was scores of buzzards. They were warming themselves on the pavement as the sun heated it and them up. Caught a minor tailwind on the way out that was to the south. Spun easily at a steady seventeen mostly. Meat of the ride was a seventeen mile stretch of uninterrupted perfectly flat pavement. I was following a course called the Lost 47 for some unknown reason. Didn't really need a course to follow as there were few turns and I had ridden the course several times many years ago. I only went around the entire lake once though, and it was around one-hundred and ten miles if I remember correctly. After making a U-turn at a loch, I headed back into a seventeen mile stretch of increasing headwind. Paced slowed down occasionally below fifteen and spent the miles easily spinning and trying to discern objects as they appeared in the distance. Had to descend again to the highway on the way back and instead of climbing back up on the dike rode the last five miles on the road. It had a decent bike lane and provided some haven from the wind. Briefly considered riding enough to make a fifty out of the route, but as had a couple of hours of driving to the next motel opted for the more slothful option. It was as intended a low stress ride.
