As I was cycling today I chased "rabbits" and thought of the recent passing of John Updike and one of his first books I read: "Run Rabbit Run".
RABBIT!!! That's what racing greyhounds are taught to chase. When I first saw that title, "Run Rabbit Run" in the 60's, I thought about greyhound racing, which was really popular when I was growing up in south Florida. I had a classmate whose family business was raising greyhounds. On the training track, a "live" rabbit was used to train the greyhounds to run dog run. Yes, the rabbit was strapped to that mechanical contraption that races around the track and the dogs in training were taught to chase the rabbit, eventually catch it and....well, we won't go there.
Hey PETA that was ages ago, so don't throw red dye on me!!!
Yes, a live rabbit was used in training the dogs. The race track used a fake rabbit.
I digress. Usually I'm just out for a ride, ambling along and often, very often, getting passed by packs of cyclists in pace lines.
And yes I am slow. Normally, I just watch them fade away.
Today I felt feisty. While cycling I felt really strong. And in the mood.
A pack of cyclists comes whizzing by me and something well just snapped: "I can catch them. They ARE my rabbit.
Pedal to the metal and busting a gut to get behind the pace line.
Caught my rabbit. Now the feast. Drafts are sooooooooo nice. Pedaling along at 22 to 25 mph and even sometimes coasting. Just gett'n sucked along for the ride.
And then I saw signs of why I love my recumbent. (Shameless plug)
- Guys shaking their hands. I remember that: numb hands..Numb Hand Numb.
- A couple of guys in the back lifting their butt of the saddle and doing a little stretch. I remember that. Need some A/C down there. Hurts a bit. Hurt Butt Hurt
- As the pack would slow down, some guys in the back taking their hands of the bike, sitting up, stretching out the back muscles. Rotating the neck muscles. I remember that. Sore Back Sore
- Don't hit me. Those are some of the advantages of a bent. No pain
I'd drop back into my amble along mode just enjoying being on the bike.
Another pack would come whizzing by.
Couldn't help myself today.
RABBIT!!!
