Ride Description: Wow! What a beautiful ride. From Roland Olson Forest Preserve I rode to Poplar Grove and back.
Strange, In spin class, I'm feelin' it when my HR hits 140, but my cruising HR was 140 on the trail today and I didn't feel like I was really working that hard. HR average includes 18 minutes of rest and taking pictures. |

With a couple inches of fresh snow yesterday and sub freezing temps after last weeks thaw, I had to check out the Long Prairie Trail. And conditions were awesome! It was mostly a light powder on the asphalt, but there were sections in the shady areas that had some frozen hard pack snow with some treacherous ice ruts here and there. I actually lost traction a handful of times when I would cross-rut, because the fresh snow cover made it very difficult to see the ruts. Perhaps a lower tire pressure would have helped, but the traction loss was very brief and not really that bad. I just slowed down and I was fine.
Another kool section was a 20-30 foot section of frozen footprints in a very bumpy old snow drift. It was like trying to clean a tough rock garden. I cleaned the ice garden on the way back.
It was a little chilly on the way back into the wind and my feet got cold, but it wasn't too bad.
What an absolute perfect day! For much of the trail, I was the first person on the trail, except for the occasional animal footprints. It was so peaceful and quiet out there. Then every once in a while I'd hit some ice that would crunch loudly under the snow.
In Caledonia I met a woman that was cross-country skiing on the trail. We chatted a bit and I rode to Poplar Grove, where I thought a long time about getting lunch at the Mexican Restaurant, but I didn't, and I turned around. Maybe next time. Their pork tacos are awesome.
Got some kool pictures too. The one where I put the camera in my tire tracks is a Home Run. I also noticed a kool guitar engraved on one of the memorial benches along side the trail. That was nice.
My 16.5 mile ride is my longest ice bike ride ever. And I set a new high for miles in February. But my previous high for February was only 18 miles. I now have 34.65 this month.
It was a glorious day and a beautiful ride.
