Another cloudy day in Florida with high winds predicted for the afternoon. Got out fairly early before the wind picked up and continued on a fifty-mile course I started a couple days ago but didn't complete. History repeated itself as I gave up on it again. It started out well enough riding south into a light breeze but things went sour on the Country Club Road. Road surface had sharp heaves every foot. Thought it can't go on forever and soldiered on. After three miles the heaves didn't disappear. I figured I had ridden over fifteen thousand of these little nasties. Really jarred the body and have ridden cobblestone sections with less ill effects. Went from feeling good at the start to quite tired after only a few miles. Once I got off that road though the ride improved but the damage was done. Kept pedaling to the furthest southern point on the course and picked up a good tailwind. Course passed through Lake City residential and commercial sections that provided some welcome entertainment. Learned that the lights don't pick up cyclists and spent several minutes waiting for cars to show up to trip the sensors. Wasn't too bummed until after waiting at an extended light stoppage immediately rolled up to a railroad crossing where a train was parked. Waited ten minutes for the train to move and finally gave up and tried to find an alternate route. Got trapped in a couple of residential loops trying to find another crossing but mapping software let me down as it led me to a bridge that no longer exists. Actually turned out to be a good section though as hit several short steep climbs where I had to use some of my neglected climbing muscles. Returned to the original crossing point and found the train had gone. Kept riding north but bailed as wind was picking up and though that if I continued I would be pedaling back into it for the final miles. Bailed on the ride and cut across to my motel that was fortunately a paved road. Wasn't a fun ride today mostly from the ill effects of three miles of rough road.
