I've Got Something to Say

Woke up this morning with rain falling, and even some sleet off & on, too. Jacque & I still got dressed & went downstairs for breakfast, sticking to our usual schedule/plan. It was noticeably quieter at breakfast, there were one or two other people floating around as we got there, and about 3 or 4 others migrated in & out while we ate.
We returned up to our room, I got dressed for the day on the slopes and we finished getting our other supplies ready to go. Hearing some commotion in the halls, I poked my head out to see a few other members of our party scurrying around. The conversation that ensued centered on the idea of ‘ski-ability’ of the day. With the rain falling, and the forecast calling for more through the morning/day and changing over to snow by tomorrow, the uncertainty was what condition the slopes would be all day, especially as sloppy & mushy as they were yesterday. I didn’t take a straw poll, but the consensus was to cut our losses and head for home today. Jacque & I could have stayed – she said she would sit in the lodge by herself (with the laptop & DVD’s, etc.) while I go out on the slopes, but I don’t know if the thrill factor would be enough to be worth it & then driving home on Monday with snow scheduled to move into the area. Major contributing factors that played into the decision to head home today was the ski resort agreed to refund our fee for Sunday’s portion of our weekend, in addition to the hotel (MainStay Suites, Dubuque) agreeing not to charge us for our Sunday night stay should we decide to depart.
Part of our group stays on the IA & MO side of the Mississippi River, following Hwy 61 for a majority of their route, since they live in St Charles County. We took that route home last year, just to know we’d have some friends near by if we were to hit some snow that was forecasted for the area. This year we decided to stay with our usual route through IL, caravanning with Dave & Regina Pfeiffer, and the Brisch family. We got on the road about 11 AM, which allowed time for Regina to pay a visit to the Drs & nurses at the hospital where she spent a week last year after breaking her leg while skiing (someone collided into her). After stopping to eat a late lunch in Galesburg, IL, we did arrive at home late in the afternoon without any major incidents.
