Didn't take long for springllike weather to return as the bright sunshine and warm southern winds had the temperature well into the forties by ten in the morning. Today's goal was to climb Varney Hill in Cayuta and collect new data with my Garmin. Only have data for a descent on this hill from last year and doesn't appear that my Garmin gives very accurate data on the descent. Probably because I collect many more data points on the ascent what with spending much more time on the upgrades. First had to climb New Odessa hill which went pretty well today. Kept the cadence up and rode on the edge and had an acceptable time. Still need to cut off another fifty seconds for a good time. Stayed in the saddle for most of the way and it was into a stiff headwind so I don't thing another minute is out of reach. Headwind continued to Cayuta but with the warmth and sunshine it wasn't very bothersome. Made the turn in Cayuta and started up the climb. Started right off with a good section of seventeen percent grade with a fairly poor road surface as it had been recently heavily sanded. Had one thin clear path up that had been swept clean by car tires. Climb measured out at one and a quarter miles with an average grade of nine percent. Maximum grade was a little over seventeen percent and the grade slackens pretty well in the upper half. Rating got pushed up a good deal with the new data at 2.08 rating making it one of the major hills in the county. The backside descent went pretty well even into the wind. The area is very rural and wouldn't be surprised if the banjo was the favored instrument there. Saw more traffic then I expected too and it turned out to be all pick-up trucks. Descent continued down into downtown Sullivinville. It had been several years since I had ridden into the town since they put the bypass in. Hasn't changed much though they appear to have eliminated a hump it the road that we used to get some air time from. Continued down to Hanover Square where the headwind ended and the fun began. Huge headwind pushed me back to Montour and was hitting speeds in the low thirties on the back nine. Bypassed home and went to Watkins and climbed Old Corning hill than dropped down Johnson Hollow to repeat the tailwind section on the back nine again. Beautiful day with three good climbs and some high speed work. Didn't encounter any cyclists out today which was too bad they missed such a great day.
