After a week of temperatures in the teens, we got some clear skies and warm sun rocketing the temperature into the thirties. There was a fairly steady wind out of the southwest that didn't really affect the ride today. Headed up the rail trail to Millport in two or three inches of snow. It turned out to be a decent leg day as my legs were burning after a few slow steady miles uphill in snow. My computer nanny determined I had an easy day due to low heart rate. Had one four-and-a-half-mile section that required steady pressure on the pedals to maintain forward momentum and traction. First mile had quite a bit of foot traffic making for a hard frozen though choppy surface. Riding was easy by staying in the tracks but riding in the undisturbed snow was more of a challenge as the snow had a crusty hard surface that the front tire had to cut through. Got good traction but also got a burn in the legs. After the first mile there were only the tracks from a runner and a dog. Tried to ride in the tracks as much as possible to keep from cutting the snow surface. At mile two the runner turned back, and it was just me and some deer tracks until mile three where I started to encounter track traffic from the Millport end of the trail. Unfortunately, it was snowshoe tracks. I thought it would be easier to ride in the snowshoe tracks, but it wasn't. Not sure why but assume it was loss of traction in the loose snow. At mile four picked up a fat bike track and rode in the groove for most of the rest of that section. Hit the road for a short section that gave my legs some relief before another mile of trail before turning around at the post office. Looked forward to hitting the last quarter mile of paved trail but it turned out be covered with an inch of ice underneath a half inch of water. Headed back home on the highway with what I hoped would be a stiff tail wind but the turned out to be coming mostly from the west that produced more eddies than tail wind. Still, it was downhill on pavement that my tired legs appreciated. It was a fairly slow leg burning ride but
sun kept it somewhat pleasant. Looks like next week will be in the forties so probably won't be any more snow adventures this season.
