The weather this morning was a little above normal temperature wise, so it was easy to decide to ride to work. However, the forecast for the rest of the day was questionable. It called for heavy rain through the afternoon and turning to snow by Friday morning. So riding to work would mean the possibility of getting a lift home or riding home in the rain. I decided today was a bike to work day, after all I have ridden in the rain before on a couple of occasions.
My hands & feet did not get as cold this morning as they did Tuesday morning – yea, the temp was about 15 degrees warmer – but I did feel a bit more lethargic today than Tuesday. Well, not really lethargic as much as just winded. I couldn’t go as hard as I wanted, especially with the wind in a favorable, mostly tailwind, direction.
At work I could hear the rain when it started as there several sky lights in the roof, and one is almost directly over my head. John, one of my co-workers, asked if I brought my neoprene gloves to keep my hands warm & dry. It told him no. but that wouldn’t be a major concern for me. What I didn’t think about until it was almost time to get ready to leave for home was I didn’t have neoprene booties to put over my socks & sandals – yes I wore my sandals, with my thick cold weather socks, today. Then as I was getting changed to leave, I was also wishing I had my rain pants, and not just my insulated tights to wear on my legs. As it turns out the rain pants, and the neoprene booties, were not as necessary for the ride home, as the rain had stopped, so I only had to be concerned with the wet roads & road spray.
The only other concern for the way home would be the wind – strong wind – blowing from the NE at 15 MPH & gusting to 25 MPH. My route from work to home is pretty much a northerly route – right into the teeth of the wind, especially the first 1/2 to 3/4 of mile which is all uphill going up Walton Rd from Page Blvd to Midland Blvd. Well, I plodded my way up Walton, and then just kept on grinding my way home. This was the slowest ride home I can remember. I know there have been a couple rides to work that have been this slow, but nothing like this for a ride home, or any other ride, that I can remember.
I made it home. My socks were just starting to feel wet on my feet. My gloves started feeling wet before I left work as I was getting my bike loaded & ready to roll. My head stayed dry since I pulled my jacket hood up over it even after dawning my head cover & headband. I think the fender I bought & mounted a couple months ago made a big difference tonight. Oh well. As they say, a bad day on the bike is better than a good day almost anywhere else.
