Temperature climbed into the mid-forties by afternoon thanks to some hazy sunshine and a twenty mile an hour south wind. Took out the road bike for the first real ride of the year. Still bundled up nicely as the wind chill would be in the thirties. Found my winter gear was quite a bit snugger than I remembered it being at the end of last season. Had a short ride through town before hitting the first climb of the year, and was amazed at how much faster the road bike is on pavement than the mountain bike is in snow. Initially had some issues getting all the sensors working but finally got things connected. Had to do a couple miles into the wind before hitting Fitzpatrick Hill. The climb is only a little over a mile long ascending five hundred feet with only a couple of sections over ten percent. Stood up on the first steep section at the start of the climb and immediately felt the weight gain from a slothful winter. Ran out of leg and breath before even seeing the top of the short section. Dropped into the granny gear and planned on a long day. Did recover a bit on the six to eight percent sections and felt better on the last steep section though it was overall a very slow climb. Was rewarded at the top by the headwind and struggled a little more as the road kept ascending through rolling terrain. Got to the highpoint of the ride east of Millport and found that I was barely averaging ten miles an hour. Hardly in race shape despite exhausting bouts on the trainer all winter. Continued into the wind until Horseheads where I hooked up with the tailwind section of the ride down the slot on SR 14. Had a few fun sections as the speeds hovered in the high twenties. Roads were fairly decent though the shoulders had quite a bit of salty grit and some new potholes that showed up over the winter. Good to be back on the road bike again despite all the indications of being overweight and out of shape. Still not bad for February.
