Another unusually warm day required the road bike. Wicked westerly wind was blowing hard so planned a ride with the headwind sections protected as best as possible from the wind. Went against my convension of starting rides into the wind by catching a blistering tailwind through Watkins and up SR 14 to Rock Stream. Climb went very well with the extra push and stayed in the saddle and spun it out and the first hill and ten miles of the ride passed quickly. Turned into the wind and started the next long climb from Rock Stream to Reading Center and was pleasantly surprised that the gusting wind wasn't too bad as it appeared to swirl quite a bit and was not constantly in my face. Legs stayed light and loose and continued the climb up to Sugar Hill and again this section of climb into the wind was not as bad as I had anticipated. Had a good average speed cresting the climb on Sugar Hill and the first twenty miles of climbs had gone very well. Next ten miles of downhill into the wind turned out well also as nearly all of that section was in the various forests and the trees really helped block the wind. Popped out of the woods in Beaver Dams and went back into the open and caught a tailwing along SR414 that pushed me to Johnson Hollow. Coasted down Johnson Hollow and again caught the tailwing back to Montour down SR 14. Legs were still light at the end of the ride and would have gone farther if I hadn't run short of light. Hiding in the woods in the headwinds and catching tailwinds on the state roads worked very well today and pretty much turned the headwinds in my favor.
