 A Noisy Thermometer Ride.

On Friday night, I drove by the trail crossing near Roland Olson Forest Preserve and it looked like Thursday's 45° temps and all day rains, followed by sub freezing temps on Friday, had turned the hard pack snow on the trail to an icy garden of delight for my Nokian studded tires.

So, I was looking forward to a nice icy ride. But as I headed east from the parking lot, the slightly rutted ice bed went away after a mile and I didn't see much ice on the path after that.
I did come across several stretches of frozen snow on my way to Caledonia, Poplar Grove and Beaverton Road, but for the most part, my studded tires were buzzing on the cold asphalt like a hornets nest.
When I got Beaverton road, the Trail veers to the north, right into the frigid north wind. That's where I started to feel the cold. Time to turn around.

After I got back to Roland Olson Forest Preserve, I noticed I was at 19.5 miles. Hmmm, Since it was 24° when I started this morning, I only need 3.5 more miles for a Thermometer Ride.
My toes were getting cold, my frozen saddle was starting to make me squirm, and I was getting a little tired at this point but I wanted to do a "Thermo", so I crossed Atwood Road and continued west on the Stone Bridge Trail.

The SBT is a crushed limestone surface, and its frozen condition silenced my Nokian studs. Sweet!
Then I came across a stretch of smooth frozen snow that lasted almost 2 miles. This was fun.
Except for the occasional patch of thin crunchy ice, riding on the ice is peacefully quiet.

I went as far as I needed and turned around.
My feet were very cold when I got to the car. But I had just done my longest sub-freezing Thermometer Ride and it felt good.

24°, 24.12 miles. It was nice to be out on the bike.
