Met up with Joe in Landrum, SC near the North Carolina border and headed into the mountains for a climbing adventure. While it was still foggy and misty earlier in the morning, by our start time of eleven the sun finally appeared and quickly raised the temperature into the sixties. Ended up doing nineteen climbs from a short third mile and one hundred feet to the longest climb at a little over six miles with seventeen hundred feet of elevation change. We did have one steep climb that Joe's computer registered a seventeen percent grade. Most of the climbs though averaged three or four percent with the average distance of two miles. Road surface on the long climb was not good which wasn't much of a problem on the way up due to the low speed, but it presented a problem as we had to descend on it for two miles after a short loop in a mountain valley. Descent was fairly slow and painful due to bumps, potholes and tired bodies. Last twenty miles was mostly downhill but our course out of the mountains was on a eight mile descent on a road that was posted as closed ahead where we started the descent in Saluda. We chanced it and descended several miles before coming up to a barricade that we crossed. Wasn't too concerned as we passed several riders coming up the climb so figured that the blockage was passable by bicycles. Once over the barricade, we went a couple of miles where sections of the outside lane were missing having been devoured by the chasm. Assume it is damage remaining for the hurricane a couple of years ago. Did quite a bit of work on the climbs but pretty much coasted the downhills and spent a little time waiting for Joe who wasn't climbing well after the first thirty miles and was suffering from cramping. I did get a good work out today but not enough to maintain my training level after losing four days to rain. Weather here is supposed to be glorious tomorrow but unfortunately I'm heading back north into the real cold.
