The icestorm has left the roads unridable in NE Texas and have delayed the outage for a week leaving me an opportunity for some riding as long as it is not in East Texas. Drove west toward warmer weather. Drove through Stanton, TX and was greeted by a sign stating Stanton was the "home of 3000 friendly people and a few old sore heads." Didn't stop to ride there as the although the people claimed to be friendly the clouds looked rather threatening. Ultimate destination is Big Bend National Park which promises steep climbs, spectacular views and 70 degree weather. Stopped in Fort Stockton and took a ride on a road running parallel to I-10. Originally tried to head north into the wind but couldn't get speed much above 11 mph so opted for an out and back to the west. The wind never let up the entire way and the mountains seen in the distance never got any closer. I think that the reason people live here is that the horses pulling the settler's wagons decided they would rather die than go any further in the wind.It wasn't all bad though as I did ride 40 miles without encountering any traffic. Not much in Fort Stockton but seems to be an adequate waypoint in my journey to the other side of nowhere.
