Wind shifted to the south for the day and despite the lack of any sunshine the temperature climbed into the mid-thirties. We did have about a half inch of sleet that fell overnight that made for an interesting surface to ride on. Took the mountain bike out for a brief ride about the swamp. Caught the stiff tailwind to Watkins on the rail trail and found some tracks from a cross bike that must have done an out and back. Didn't have any issues with the snow on the way out until I crossed the canal on the highway bridge and the snowplows had moved the slush from road unto the sidewalk that required a bit of effort to push through on the climbing side. Returned home on the single track on the wooded side of the canal and encountered patches of ice underneath the half inch of sleet that caused a couple of adrenalin rushes. Had some more fun on the off-camber sections on the Bird Trail and lost it a couple times but was able to recover without falling. Found myself once hoping the ice on the canal was thick enough that I wouldn't break through if I lost it and fell in. Would hate to have to finish the ride soaked. Bumped a couple of trees but remained upright until I got home. Wind was unwelcome but had fun on the ride. Wind shifts back to the north tomorrow and temperature looks to remain below freezing for the next ten days, but it appears at least the single digit stuff is a thing of the past. It looks like its back on the trainer for the next couple of weeks.
