 Riding With Music.

I am a huge music lover. All kinds. (OK, maybe not so much Country, Rap, Opera, and Broadway Musicals, but there are exceptions.) I have more CD's than some radio stations. (Still have some vinyl too)
And I am lucky to be able to listen to my music collection every day while I'm at work.

So when the world was introduced to portable music players, (The scene from the 1979 Spielberg comedy "1941" comes to mind, where some Japanese guys are trying fit this huge tube style radio down the tiny porthole on a submarine, and one of them says "We got to find a way to make these things smaller".)

I thought this would be the perfect way to connect the two loves of my life, Cycling and music.

Until I tried it.

Many years ago I brought my music with me on a mountain bike ride. I was so excited to try it, I remember thinking how great it was going to be. But when I hit the trails, it just didn't feel right. I should love it. But I don't. It's like a Root Beer Float. I love root beer and ice cream, but put them together, and it doesn't work for me.

When I'm riding, I love to take in the sounds around me. The sounds of critters scampering in the forest around me. Tree branches rubbing together in the wind. The sound of my tires on the earth. Wearing headphones (earbuds) disrupts my connection with nature. I guess that's why I love riding so much.
I have ridden a couple times on a Rails-To-Trails path while listening to a baseball game, but that's as far as it goes for me and riding with sound in my ears.

Anyway, I started thinking about this because, when I got my new MacBook computer, I also got the new talking iPod Shuffle. This is so cool.

I'll use it for working out, and walking or jogging.

If you can ride with music, I envy you a little. It seemed like the perfect match for me. But alas, it wasn't meant to be.
