Another abnormally warm day with the temperature hitting seventy. Didn't plan on doing many miles today and wanted to get some climbing in. Hit my first steep climb of the years and didn't do well at all. Had no strength in legs whatsoever and had instead a good deal of pain. Dropped into the granny gear and spun it out only going over at 6.3. Probably could have got the average up a little by sprinting the last few fairly flat yards but didn't try since figured I wouldn't be able to get to seven which would be a decent climb for me. Crested the hill and started pedaling into the wind again. Pain in legs did not subside as I hoped and so spun easily for an hour hoping the legs would clear. Felt fairly good as I headed into the second climb of the day. It is a two mile climb with the first mile a three or four percent grade and then kicking up to the ten percent range for the last half of the climb. Temperature dropped significantly on the climb as the chasm probably wont see any sunshine until April. The climb was still firmly in winter's embrace with lots of ice and deep snow still present off the sides of the road. The pavement was clear so really didn't have any worries about bad road conditions. Legs unfortunately started to hurt again as soon as I started the climb. Dropped again into the granny gear and grinded up to the top. Highlight of the day came as I emerged from deep shady valley into bright sunshine and its accompanying warmth. Ride and terrain went downhill from there. Started the downhill into a strong gusting wind that was throwing me around the road. Thought one time if I stopped pedaling that the wind would actually push me backwards up the hill. Decided to abandoned my climbing day as wasn't really climbing hills but surviving them. Headed down into Horseheads and caught the tailwind back home with a good deal of coasting involved. Got some miles in with some disappointing climbing but not to worried as I think the weakness in the legs is a result of poor nutrition rather than the other usual suspects. Have been dieting to try to get down to climbing weight which is going fairly well though there is a long way to go. Still can't complain much about a seventy degree day in March.
