I noticed the backup lights on the SUV while I was still a couple houses away, and it was starting to roll back toward the street. I know the car parked to the right of the SUV was probably causing some issue with the driver seeing me, but I kept rolling, making my way to the left side of the street in order to avoid them, and hopefully be sighted by them. They were fully in the street and I was along the opposite curb, directly behind them as I said "Good morning." to them. The driver's side window was down, so I was heard and she quickly apologized. So I waved and kept going - not that big of deal, especially since she seemed pretty cautious in her actions.
Later in the ride as I was nearing work, I was descending down the hill on Walton Rd. As I rolled to the intersection at Page, there were no vehicles in front of me (heading south), and one vehicle across the intersection heading north, and I noticed the pedestrian signal to cross Walton Rd was flashing the Don't Walk, so the signal was about to cycle from the Page right-of-way to Walton Rd - or so I thought. I was rolling very slowly - enough to keep my balance - trying to time the signal change, and noticed the westbound Page light was no longer green, so I should be getting my green any second now. I also noticed there was an eastbound car trying to make a last second left, so I had to hesitate a tad longer. Once they cleared out of the way, I continued through the intersection, and about the time I made it to about the mid-point of the intersection I noticed my light was still red. Now I know there's some delay in lights changing to green and I wasn't going that fast yet...then I looked up to my left and noticed that the eastbound lanes still had a green - the light was cycling to give that car a green arrow and not cycling for Walton Rd, like I thought it was doing. Good thing for me there was no traffic coming in the eastbound lanes as I completed my way across the intersection. I apologized for breaking the rules and running the red light, though I don't think anybody heard me.
Update from the ride home
When I was dealing with the flat tire issue a couple weeks ago, I mentioned to Jacque that I need to look into getting new tires, as my current ones are really showing some wear. Not just the tread, but some deteriation on the sidewalls. Well today my front tire experienced a failure in the sidewall thus causing the tube in the front tire to blow. Flat tubes can be repaired or replaced, even when the tire has a slight failure there are remedies & tempoary fixes to get one going down the road again. However, this episode, being in the sidewall, was beyond those means, and since I wasn't close enough to home to just walk it, I called Jacque to come pick me up. I am glad this happened on a flat stretch of road where I was having to deal with a headwind, and not, say, one of the downhill sections I get up to 25-30 mph.
Additionally, when this happened, I was in persuit of another cyclist that I had gotten to within 40 yards. I couldn't tell if he was a commuter like me, or if he was on some sort of travel adventure. Ugh.
