But I didn't have time to ride my bike today!

That sounds almost sacrilegious to main stream members of BikeJournal .com. And what makes things worse is I didn’t work today, so how could I not find the time to ride on such a glorious spring like day?

Well, I am actually on vacation all week and have not made any major plans for the week. One thing I have been mentioning to my wife over the last few weeks is that I have not called or visited Phil, a friend of mine going through some health issues. So, after looking at things to do this week and recognizing that my wife is working on Monday and taking off the rest of the week and Phil was still in the hospital after a biopsy procedure last Monday, it would be good for me to go visit him today.

As I arrived at the hospital, parked my truck and made my way to the hospital building, I crossed paths with the Minister of Worship from my church (Fee Fee Baptist Church), Dennis. We stopped and talked briefly as he was coming from visiting Phil and gave me some of the details, including that he was looking to be released today. I went on up and visited with him and his wife, Tracey, and then helped them cart their belongings out to the car. He then went to his oncologist’s office – in another building on the hospital campus – and to a resource center before finally heading for home. I tagged along so I could escort them home and make sure to get Phil settled in. I stayed the afternoon and into the evening. Phil feel asleep as we were watching TV, and Tracey headed out to get fill some prescriptions and get a few other necessities. Dinner was brought over by some members of their Sunday Morning Bible Study group and Phil’s mom would be coming over a little while latter, so I partook in the dinner wanting hang around until his mom arrived.

Well, if that wasn’t just fun enough, a few minutes before Phil’s mom arrived, my wife called me and said I needed to call Brandon – our next door neighbor – because his house is on fire, yes his house was on fire. So, I dug through the directory on my phone to find Brandon’s cell entry and called him. A few minuets later, Phil’s mom arrived and I excused myself to head for home – 30 minutes away.

As I arrived the flames had been extinguished, but the crew was still searching & looking for hot spots. I and a friend of Brandon’s who lives up the street, started helping Brandon pull some things that could be salvaged and some things (like clothes) that would be useful over the next several days. A crew from a construction company was there to board up the entry ways, and would come back Tuesday morning to cover the roof with a tarp – rain is slated for Wed.

How good is God’s timing? How else would I explain that I chose today to go and visit Phil and since I had no other obligations (my Monday night basketball league finished up last week) or pending plans I was free to assist them getting their things from the hospital to home and get settled in at home? How else would you try to explain that as I was able to leave Phil’s house without leaving them alone, I was able to come home and assist my neighbor in any way possible and not have to worry about getting a good nights sleep so I could get up and go to work the next day? And to be able to offer a room for him (which he didn’t need) or his dog (who was safely rescued from with in the house by a police officer and my wife before Brandon arrived home)? Or even the fact that my wife was home; between her calling 911 (and the neighbor across the street noticing the fire and called 911) and calling me to get in touch with Brandon so he was aware of the situation sooner rather than later. How would Brandon have to handle things differently if we were not able to get in touch with him?

I had thought earlier in the day about the many names of God – God the healer, God of peace, God the provider to name just a few – and I thought about God of timing. Even though that would not necessarily become an official title, it would probably just fall under God the provider – He can provide what we need, when we need it; His timing is always perfect. There will be a time to ride my bike – I even think that time will be sometime this week.
