 Chillin Ride
Been off the bike and off my feet for a week with another bout of illness. Got up today and felt better and planned a light day to help me get back on track. Snow was on the ground this morning, but it was accompanied by bright sunshine that quickly burned it off. Really didn't feel like getting back on the trainer so bundled up and took a short ride outside during peak sunshine. Wind was out of the south in the high single digits and it was quite nice as long as I was out of the shadows. Headed up, once again, the valley to Millport in a headwind. Felt pretty good and kept a high cadence and low wattage output, and thought I was doing okay. Then the spots kicked in and decided to back off a bit. Ride was pretty uneventful with the only a couple of things helping to take my mind off my cold fingers. Encountered three different school buses that I had to stop for as they disgorged their students. The other item was a pickup truck with a large plank sticking out of the right side of the bed a good ten feet over the side. He passed me by going by in the opposing lane when it was clear giving me wide berth. I watched as he approached a cyclist ahead of us. He probably could have passed the cyclist with the plank high enough above the rider unless the cyclist came out of the saddle in which case it would have whacked him pretty solidly. The driver was smart enough to wait until the other lane was clear before passing. We used to call pickups trucks with stuff jutting out the sides like that bike slayers. I did catch up to the other cyclist, but he turned almost as soon as I caught him so didn't get to hear his story. I did think he looked pretty cold. Think he must have just descended into the valley as otherwise I would have passed him earlier on my out and back route. Have a couple of days of maybe ridable upcoming, but it mostly looks cold. At least now it is mostly above freezing.
