Sun was out today and although it was too cold with the wind for my road bike, I pumped up the tires on the mountain bike and headed out for a short spin. I opted for the traditional New Years day course that goes up Dug Road then down the New Road to Millport. The climb turned out to be about the only enjoyable part of the ride. I had to struggle to get up the two mile climb but it was in the sun and out of the wind, and it felt good to be on the bike. Usually the descent down New Road involves quite a bit of walking as the road has been abandoned for a few years and is typically covered in either sheets of ice or deep snow. It turned out to be a little better this year as only a few short sections were ice covered. Stayed on the bike for the most part but rode with on foot out of the clips to steady myself on the slippery surface. Years passed I would have pushed the pace and risked a crash, but now it takes be too long to heal from even minor injuries, so I wimped out an went slow. Bike trail looked too muddy as I passed it in Millport and so went down the highway. Strong south wind made the last part pass quickly but not before I started getting frosty toes.
