 Canines 2 Me 0
Temperatures still in the forties for the high but really wasn't much wind and a warm sun made for a decent day. Felt good as I pedaled off into the wind and headed off into dog country to do a few sprints. The white border collie at mile three didn't show today so didn't get my warm up in. She doesn't usually chase me and just seems to run along with me for the fun of it. Mile six sprint dog is not so friendly and is probably the most dangerous on this route, having actually caught me and bitten my handlebar drop. Didn't see her out today though either as I rode by her usual ambush point. Heard a woof and from behind me and knew it was on. I stood up and hammered up the rise but failed to accelerate fast enough and she was running beside me looking for and opening to get a bite in. Rather than go faster I was slowing as I was already out of juice. Got to the top of the grade and knew I was in trouble but she must have gotten to the end of her territory and gave up the pursuit. Was glad I had gotten a jump today as even up man to dog she had me. Hoped to recover before the next encounter and started to feel a little better. Next sprint was with an unknown yellow retriever type dog that was fast on her feet. Didn't know whether this was a pursuit or a fun run but it became apparent it was the latter as despite my best effort, I couldn't get my speed over 22 mph, which happened to be below the dogs cruising fee. She left me behind and made no effort to turn on me and actually slowed down so I could keep up. Couldn't even do that though as my speed rapidly dropped. Felt terrible, my legs got heavy and found myself near totally drained. I apologized to the dog as she turned and trotted off toward home. Made the turn and headed back toward town with a tailwind and thought I would pick the pace back up. Struggled all the way back to town and did notice that my rear was near flat and did the last couple of miles bouncing on the rim. Decided I'd better take tomorrow off and end my streak at two days.
