I had a different encounter with a motorist this morning – one I can’t fully explain. After crossing a set of railroad tracks, I see a preschool van a block to my right waiting to make a turn onto the street that parallels the tracks, and a car come towards the van’s & my direction. What really got my attention to them was one of them was honking their horn – not sure which one, and it wasn’t really evident why as they were both a block away from me. A few seconds later I hear some horn honking again, this time it’s a vehicle half a block behind me heading my direction.
OK, is this person completely lost & looking for some directions? Is something about to fall off my bike that I’m not aware of, or what? The car, a white PT Cruiser, slows down to roll down the street beside me, and I see the drive reaching for the window controls. She doesn’t lower the passenger window but is apparently saying something – I can see her mouth going but have no clue what she is saying. She is wearing a yellow/green safety vest (and looks to be at least 70 yrs old), and based on the direction she came from I assume she works in the nearby RR yard. Not being able to hear her I start to imitate the teacher on The Peanuts cartoons, "wha wha wha wha wha" and flapping one had like it was a puppet. Then she smiled and continued on her way. OK then.
As she got to the traffic light at the intersection a block ahead of me, she almost got into the left turn lane (her right wheels were in the thru lane), and then as a truck made a left from the crossing street, she honked at him. Hmmmmm.
Other than that, the 15 mph headwind most of the way, and my legs feeling a little fatigued from racing the traffic lights this week (yet I raced the light at the Rock Rd – which is uphill into the wind) it was a beautiful ride into work this morning!
