 King Road Climb
Sun was back out but there was a brisk cold north wind blowing. Got out the mountain bike and after finding and repairing a flat eventually got on the road. I think I have only had two flats on the bike in the eleven years I have owned it but still cursed about it. It was a little warmer than when I climbed Dug Road last week, and I have been riding the trainer and so had high hopes of having a better climb than last week. Pushed myself during the middle portion of the climb and had a better time in my grasp but failed on the last section and got near the same time as last week. This week instead of heading down New Road I headed up King Road. I've never been up this road and didn't know it was even there until another cyclist mentioned it to me. The climb looked imposing and I knew I would eventually get to the top but also knew some suffering was on the menu. Climbed very slowly but still had sweat dripping off my head band despite the cool temperature. Even with the suffering I got some satisfaction from cresting the top. I didn't enjoy the descent down the sun sheltered hollow as my sweat soaked body overcooled, and I felt rather frosty by the time I got dumped out on Johnson Hollow. Did a half mile of the trail on the way back but abandoned it as it was still too muddy for my taste. Opted again for the highway for the return leg, but it was not as quick as last week as now I had a cold headwind to contest. It wasn't as cold as last week as eventually my clothing wicked away the excessive moisture, and I worked up some heat pedaling. Turned out to be a rough ride as my body felt like I'd been dragged through a knothole after the ride.
