Rain started to slacken off before noon and headed out of Caddo Valley toward Hot Springs on a repeat of my traditional pre-work ride that I did on my way into Texas in late February. Felt logy on the first highway climb in a light drizzle and really didn't push it but started to feel a little frisky when I got off the highway onto the secondary roads and got a little aggressive on the rolling climbs. Thought I would push the pace for the remainder of the first hour of the ride and try to crest the tower climb on 128 at an over fifteen average that I failed to do in February. Started the last three and a half mile climb at 16.4 and felt good although I was starting to experience some back strain. Went into the last thirteen percent section at 15.7 and felt like I would make it but ended up pretty much overclocking my heart rate. Thought for a minute that I would have to get off and walk but was close enough to the top that I thought I would still be over fifteen. Finished at 15.3 which was a mile an hour faster than February. Had a decent downhill though I still wimped out and braked excessively on one sharp corner. Tried to do the highway climb back over the ridge on SR 7 in the big chainring but bogged down and crawled upward. Felt better on the short steep climbs over the last fifteen miles as the sun came out and picked the average speed up almost into mediocre. Had a good ride and felt good riding aggressively but still really climbed poorly on the long highway climbs.
